How to find Your Unicorn Client

Picturing Your Ideal Client Is Like Imagining a Unicorn. Here Is How to Find Yours.

For my birthday, my husband gave me a unicorn balloon instead of flowers.

And it made me think of how we picture our ideal client, something fun, unique, and often only in our imagination.

We struggle to answer basic questions. What do they care about? What are they struggling with?

Your ideal client might be you, two to five years ago.

In this episode of the Happy Healthy Hustle Podcast, I share three strategies to identify and connect with your unicorn client, from your own past to Facebook groups to Amazon reviews.

The closer you get to their exact language, the easier they are to reach.

You become the guide who helps them become the hero of their own story.

0:00 Meet Your Unicorn Client

[00:00:00] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: Welcome back to the Happy Healthy Hustle. Today we are going to identify and connect with our ideal client, or as I like to call it, our unicorn. Whenever we think about our clients, we are trying to imagine somebody, almost like imagining a unicorn, and it is challenging. We struggle with questions like what does our client do, what do they care about, what are they struggling with?

0:34 The Balloon That Inspired This Episode

[00:00:34] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: My birthday month in July actually included a unicorn. Instead of flowers, my husband gave me a beautiful unicorn balloon. When I looked at it, I thought, it is kind of like what we do in our business, thinking about something fun and unique, and something that may be only in our imagination. So today we will identify three strategies to connect with our ideal client, our unicorns.

1:32 Strategy One: Your Client Is You, Years Ago

[00:01:32] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: My first strategy is to think about my ideal client as myself. As an entrepreneur, you started your business because you struggled with something and created a solution. That solution helped you, and it was not unique to you, others struggled with it too. So you shared it passionately, and it helped you succeed. Your ideal client might be you, two to five years ago, when you were struggling.

2:49 The Time-Travel Exercise

[00:02:49] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: Scroll back through your phone and look at your pictures from two to five years ago. What were you doing, wearing, eating, and most importantly, what emotions were you experiencing? Think about the transformation between then and now. What would you tell yourself back then, what would you tell yourself not to worry about? That version of you is a great starting point for your ideal client avatar, and now you can teach others to overcome the same problems.

4:55 Strategy Two: Listen in Facebook Groups

[00:04:55] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: The second way to find your ideal client is by looking at Facebook groups. They are perfect for seeing what topics people discuss and what questions they ask. Often people post questions that do not get answered, and if you know the answer, you can position yourself as an expert. Collect these questions in a Google Sheet so you can use the exact wording your ideal client uses.

5:59 Match Their Exact Language

[00:05:59] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: When people post questions in Facebook groups, they might also be Googling them. The closer you are to their exact language, the more likely they are to find you through a blog post or lead magnet. You are positioning yourself as the guide to help them through their problem, and when they find you in their search, you are guiding them to become the hero in their own journey.

7:14 Strategy Three: Mine Amazon Reviews

[00:07:14] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: The third strategy is to look at Amazon reviews for books related to your niche, whether it is wellness, gut health, or marketing. Read what people liked or did not like and what they felt was missing. This gives you insight into what your ideal client values and needs. Reviews often reveal common themes, and you can see what else those reviewers purchased, which helps you add more colors to your unicorn.

9:41 Finding the Patterns

[00:09:41] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: By understanding these common threads, from yourself a few years ago, Facebook group questions, or Amazon reviews, you start to see recurring patterns and can position yourself as the expert who meets those needs. You might notice people want a step-by-step guide or a checklist, or a fifteen-minute video over an hour-long one. The more closely you match your ideal client’s language and needs, the easier it is to describe your unicorn.
