More Than a Mug: Memories Over Followers

You posted it. Good numbers. A week later, nobody remembers.

You posted it. Good reach, good numbers. And a week later, nobody remembers it was your post.

Sammy felt the same thing scrolling past an influencer who seemed to do everything for show. So we put the phone away and made tea.

This episode is about visibility vs resonance. Being seen and being felt are two completely different outcomes, and only one of them builds trust.

It takes four minutes, a pineapple mug, and a plastic cup from a restaurant in Lahaina that no longer exists.

In this episode of the Happy Healthy Hustle Podcast, Sammy and I trade an annoyed scroll for a memory that never needed a photo, and I share the one question to ask instead of “how do I get more people to see me?”

Things stay with people when they are felt. Being seen was never enough.

That is the whole idea behind Petite Practice®. Small, quiet things carry more than the loud ones. Including a coffee mug.

Key Takeaways

  1. Being seen and being felt are two different outcomes. Only one of them builds trust.
  2. Before you buy something for the photo, ask whether it brings you joy when nobody is watching.
  3. An ordinary object can hold a memory more reliably than a photo does.
  4. Sammy’s pineapple cup outlived the restaurant it came from. Meaning does not need the place to still exist.
  5. Your brain works like a jukebox. The object is the button. The memory is the song.
  6. Put the phone down before you decide how you feel. Annoyed turned into smiling in under four minutes.

Three Petite Practice® Questions

petite practice question one

1. Which object in your home holds a memory you have never posted, and what does it play when you look at it?

petite practice question two

2. Where are you chasing being seen right now, when what you actually want is to be felt?

petite practice question three

3. What would change this week if you asked “how do I make the right person feel seen?” instead of “how do I get more people to see me?”

[00:00:02] Intro (Dr. Christiane): You posted it, good reach, good numbers, and a week later, nobody remembers it was your post. Because here’s the truth: being seen and being felt are two completely different outcomes. Only one of them builds trust. This is the Happy Healthy Hustle podcast, and I’m your host, Dr. Christiane. Today, the pineapple mug story and the one question to ask instead of, “How do I get more people to see me?” If this one lands, follow the show and leave a comment telling me whose message has stayed with you. Visibility gets you in the room. Resonance is what makes people stay.

0:50 The Influencer Who Does Everything for Show

[00:00:50] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: Sammy, what’s going on?

[00:00:51] Sammy: This influencer just came up on my feed, and I feel like they just do everything for show.

[00:00:56] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: Oh, for sure. Let’s put your phone away.

[00:00:58] Sammy: Yeah.

[00:00:58] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: Let’s grab some tea.

[00:01:00] Sammy: You know what? Sometimes I have a feeling that with an influencer, a lot of things are just for clicks and numbers, getting more followers. But the things they talk about, the items they show, are they actually things that they truly resonate with, or enjoy even?

1:19 Two Requirements for a Coffee Mug

[00:01:19] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: We don’t know. So take a look at this cute mug right here.

[00:01:24] Sammy: I love it. It’s a pineapple.

[00:01:26] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: And I have to actually tell you that when I needed a new mug, I had a couple of requirements. First, it had to be big, because I always drink a lot. And second, it had to be an item that I really feel brings joy to my life.

[00:01:42] Sammy: Totally.

[00:01:42] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: Then when I look in it, I was like, all right, pineapples remind me of, well, first of all, the delicious fruit, which I love. But second, it reminds me of Maui. Have you been to Maui?

1:55 A Pineapple Cup, Age Five, Maui

[00:01:55] Sammy: I have been to Maui, which is also a weird thing to bring up, because when I was five, I was sitting at this restaurant called Cheeseburgers in Paradise, and I was ordering a tropical smoothie, and they asked me if I wanted to upgrade to the pineapple cup. And of course, at five years old, I was trying to convince my parents, and eventually they gave in, as a little memento from the trip. Which is now even more special, because I was able to share it with my cousin, and we both still have it. It’s still sitting at home on my dresser, and I think I have a couple coins still left in it. I’ve used it as my piggy bank.

2:26 The Restaurant the Lahaina Fire Took

[00:02:26] Sammy: But it was even cooler now that I still have this, ’cause sadly, in the Lahaina fire, right, it’s right on the water, and that was one of the first things to go. So it’s nice that I still have a memento from that trip. And even when we keep going back, obviously now we can’t go to that restaurant, but I still have a reminder, and I don’t even need a photo of it, which is so nice, because I just can picture the memory. Which I think is special, and it proves how important it was in my life, and how that is literally my happy place.

2:58 Your Brain Is a Jukebox

[00:02:58] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: You know, I sometimes think of these moments when you look at an item. It’s nearly like your brain is like a jukebox, to where you look at the item and it’s playing the memory.

[00:03:10] Sammy: Playing something, yeah.

[00:03:11] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: Or if you watch the movie Inside Out, it’s like when one of those little balls rolls, and it’s creating a memory and then putting it in your memory bank. So your piggy bank is your memory bank of a beautiful trip to Hawaii, that creates now family history, of course, because that restaurant doesn’t even exist anymore.

[00:03:34] Sammy: Well, no, and it’s still so important to me, even though it doesn’t even exist.

3:38 The Mug That Never Gets Used

[00:03:38] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: Beautiful. So what do you do with your mug now? Do you use it?

[00:03:42] Sammy: No, I don’t use it, ’cause it still sits on my dresser, and, what I was saying before, I have a couple little coins left in it. ‘Cause I still…

3:50 Resonance Over Visibility

[00:03:50] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: Beautiful. So I think coming back to when you were annoyed earlier, and I love that you’re smiling now. See? It was good to put that phone away. Sometimes that’s what you have to do.

[00:03:59] Sammy: That’s what you have to do.

[00:04:01] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: You have to think about things that bring you joy, that resonate with you, that bring you happy feelings. And it’s not about visibility, about showing off what you do, what you own, getting higher numbers. It’s just about resonating, getting the emotions, the feelings that really remind you of happy memories. And I think that we sometimes don’t even have to take pictures of those things. Just be in the moment, right? Just look at it and enjoy, and maybe just remember, like I said, a little memory ball that comes out and brings it up.

[00:04:36] Sammy: That’s all you need.

[00:04:36] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: That’s all that we need. Well, cheers to that memory.

[00:04:39] Sammy: Cheers.

[00:04:40] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: And cheers to more pineapples in Maui.

[00:04:42] Sammy: Yes. I hope so.

[00:04:45] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: Beautiful.
