Waiting to Feel Ready

In March 2023 I started a podcast with no studio, no perfect plan, and a German accent I decided to keep. It was totally scrappy. I pressed record anyway, and every two weeks a new episode went out. Three years later the show ranks in the top 1% globally.

Most of us wait to feel confident before we start. The order runs the other way. Confidence is the proof you collect each time you keep a small promise to yourself. The videos above show what that looks like, from a truck full of broccoli at the White House to ten years of rejection letters.

“Waiting for confidence is like waiting for perfect timing.”

– Dr. Christiane Schroeter

Step 01

Act Before You Feel Ready

Waiting for confidence is like waiting for perfect timing. It rarely shows up on schedule. If you want to feel more confident, do the thing first and let the feeling catch up. Every time you keep a small promise to yourself, your brain learns one thing: I do what I say I will do.

Self-doubt will still come along. Read it as a signal that you are stepping into something new. You can let it ride in the car. You just stop handing it the wheel.

Step 02

The Introvert Who Called the White House

My guest Lisa Cork calls herself a huge introvert. Early in her career she was promoted into sales and cried every night for three months. Her company saw other strengths and gave her afternoons to bring her marketing ideas to life.

In 1990, President Bush banned broccoli from Air Force One. Lisa wrote her first press release, sent ten tons of broccoli toward the White House, and made the cold calls to media herself. The campaign earned an estimated $150 million in free publicity. She stayed an introvert the whole time. Her commitment to the story gave her the courage to override the fear.

Step 03

Ten Years of No

Novelist Wendelin Van Draanen had a full-time job and two little kids when she decided to write. She got up at five, carved out half an hour before the house woke up, and worked on her novel. Half an hour a day for a year added up to a book.

Then came the rejections. Publishers said no for ten years. She kept taking the small steps, and today she has more than 30 books in print, a couple of them turned into movies. Sometimes the difference between rejection and success is simply the next half hour.

Step 04

Start Scrappy

Nobody talks about how rough the beginning looks. I started the Happy Healthy Hustle podcast on March 23, 2023, and it was totally scrappy. It was far from perfect. I still did it.

What carried it was a rhythm: a new episode every two weeks. A few core topics, short episodes, one afternoon to batch record. When the plan is small enough, you can keep it on a hard week. That is a Petite Practice® in action.

Step 05

Let It Be Fun

The line in this video is one I come back to often. I had confidence, and I let it be fun. No pressure. Just showing up.

Confidence grows through repetition. Speaking up in a meeting. Posting the idea. Saying yes to the thing you wanted to shrink from. Every repetition counts, and you repeat what feels light far more often than what feels like a test.

Step 06

Three Years of Showing Up

This spring the podcast turned three. It went from scrappy to something special and now ranks in the top 1% globally. None of that came from one big launch.

It came from the next episode, and then the next one. Keep a file of screenshots, kind notes, and wins along the way. When your brain forgets what you are capable of, open it and let your past self remind you.

Evidence Beats Affirmation

As a behavioral economist, I see the same pattern in my classroom and with clients. People wait for a feeling before they act. Feelings follow behavior far more reliably than the other way around. Each kept promise is a data point, and your brain trusts data.

You can also borrow belief while yours catches up. Sometimes we need other people to believe in us first. Surround yourself with mentors, peers, and friends who reflect your potential back to you. Many of my podcast guests became some of my really good friends, and that circle is part of my proof.

Every one of these small proofs is a Petite Practice®, and the full system is in Petite Practice: Small, Steady Steps to a Life of Momentum and Real Change. Start with one promise small enough to keep this week.

A Simple Petite Practice®

This week: start your proof file.

Open a folder on your phone and name it Proof. Add three things today: a kind message, a win you forgot to celebrate, a moment you followed through.

Then make one promise small enough that it feels almost too easy. Send the email. Record the first 60 seconds. Post the idea. Keep it, and add it to the folder.

When doubt shows up before your next big moment, open the file. Let your past self remind you what is true.
