Result Goals versus Action Goals

Why One Kind of Goal Almost Always Fails

Most people set the same goal over and over… and wonder why it never lands.

The reason is the kind of goal.

A result goal names what you want and when. An action goal adds the route that actually gets you there. In this episode Christiane breaks the difference wide open, then shows how petite practices turn a big goal into small, winnable steps.

Progress over perfection, one digestible piece at a time.

Key Takeaways

    1. Life is a journey, not a finish line. Goals change, so stay flexible as your passion and purpose evolve.
    2. A result goal names the what and the when. On its own, it does not work.
    3. An action goal adds the route. It ties your goal to the steps that actually get you there.
    4. Petite practices shrink the goal. Small, digestible steps feel less intimidating and beat procrastination.
    5. Practice makes progress. Aim for consistent steps, and let go of perfection.
    6. Feedback needs fresh eyes. People who do not know you yet give the honest input friends cannot.

0:00 Two Types of Goals, One That Fails

[00:00:00] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: Today I share the difference between two types of goals, and why one of them will not work. I am a podcast host and a professor of innovation and entrepreneurship, and much of what I teach comes straight from the classroom and my Mastermind Collective.

0:38 Life Is a Journey, and Goals Change

[00:00:38] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: Many entrepreneurs fail on their journey, and journey is the key word. Do not live only for when I reach that goal, then that goal, then that goal… because goals change. Stay flexible. Two years from now your taste, passion, and purpose may look different, and that is the beauty of it.

1:29 What a Result Goal Looks Like

[00:01:29] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: The first type is a result goal. For example, by May I want to offer an online course on setting boundaries and building financial knowledge. You have the month and the product. But something is missing… a result goal alone does not tell you how to get there.

2:16 What an Action Goal Adds

[00:02:16] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: The second type is an action goal, which adds the plan. Think of entering a destination in your GPS and then following the step-by-step route. The action goal ties your result to the exact steps that get you there.

3:13 Petite Practices and Progress

[00:03:13] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: This is where petite practices come in. Petite is French for small, so I break one goal into small, digestible pieces, and each one is a little win. Small steps feel less intimidating, so you stop procrastinating and start progressing. Practice makes progress. Perfection is not the point, and your to-do list becomes a ta-da list.

4:36 The Three Pillars of the Collective

[00:04:36] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: In my Mastermind Collective I build on three pillars… coaching, community, and collaboration. We are always learning, but knowledge needs to be exchanged, because the magic happens in the exchange. And collaboration turns your network into the power of many, where honest feedback makes your projects better.

6:43 European Flair and the Monthly Focus

[00:06:43] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: I add my European flair. I coach in small, digestible pieces of knowledge that give you the action you need to reach your result. The petite practices are inspired by sitting around a cafe table, designed for productivity and joy. Each month we hold a mastermind focus, where we inspire and challenge each other, trade feedback, and celebrate triumphs together.

8:31 Passport Stamps, Cafe Corners, Artisan Awards

[00:08:31] Dr. Christiane Schroeter: For a little fun, I gamify it. Reach your task for the month and you earn a passport stamp, like traveling the world. Cafe Corners is our online community with live discussions, just like in Paris, for fresh perspectives and support. And Artisan Awards give a pat on the back to members who show up for the community. The Collective is more than a program… it is a home for women in business to grow, connect, and finally reach their goals.
